The 21-mile hike

After the Michigan trip, I headed out to Mt. Rogers with Jim, Jason, John (the brother) and John (the father). On the 21 mile hike I found out that:

– 21 miles is a lot of freaking walking.
– Sometimes a person can sweat enough that wicking apparel fails to wick. Unfortunately, it was my compression shorts that were failing to wick. Fortunately, I discovered that diaper rash cream works well.
– 21 miles is so much walking that some guide books consider it to be three hikes.
– The mass of boulders below is considered a trail. My knees disagreed.
– Duff is not just a beer.
– 21 miles is pretty far.
– The summit in the highest mountain in the state is marked only by the seal below. We literally walked by it.
– 21 miles is a lot of freaking walking.
Overall, we had good weather and the scenery was great. Only the last two miles or so were excruciatingly painful which means that 18 or 19 miles were enjoyable. I call that a success.
